Navigating My Placement Year at Composite Integration

Lessons and Highlights from a Design Engineer

During my second year at university, I encountered Composite Integration at a career event. The chat about their cutting-edge equipment and innovative processes grabbed my attention, and I was hooked. Eager to dive deeper, I applied for a placement as a design engineer.

My role was incredibly varied, straddling both internal development and commercial projects. This blend of responsibilities provided a comprehensive glimpse into the real-world applications of engineering, far removed from the theoretical constructs of academia.

Over the year, I significantly sharpened my skills in Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and technical drawing—skills that are indispensable in engineering. But more than the technical skills, it was the foray into the commercial environment that marked a major shift from my previous experiences. Learning to navigate this new world, where teamwork and project management play critical roles, was both challenging and exhilarating.

One of the highlights for me was leading the project on the bespoke CIJECT 5 machines. Watching a project evolve from initial concept to final execution was not just rewarding but a confirmation of my future in this field.

Working at Composite Integration was more than just a job; it was about being part of a community. The camaraderie and support from my colleagues bolstered my learning and made every day enjoyable.

As this chapter at Composite Integration comes to a close with my return to university, I look forward to what lies ahead. The plan is to rejoin Composite Integration over the next summers and ultimately return as a full-time design engineer after graduation.

Reflecting on my time at Composite Integration, I am immensely grateful for the opportunity and the support from everyone at the company. This experience has not only prepared me for my continuing studies but has also ignited a deeper passion for my field. I can’t wait to bring back more to Composite Integration, hopefully contributing as much to the company as it has to my personal and professional growth.
